Look to Olympians for marketing muses

Posted on Jul 23, 2012 by YuMe

Looking at the characteristics of successfully marketed Olympic athletes can help video advertisers find appropriate spokesmodels.

Although marketing campaigns featuring Olympians are restricted to official Olympic sponsors through the duration of the London Games, marketing companies and brands may want to look at the characteristics of some of the Summer Games' most likely star athletes to spice up their fall campaigns.

Up-and-coming
Being ahead of the curve in terms of contracting great athletes about to become stars is a great way to find the perfect spokesperson for a campaign or advertising scheme. U.S. teen gymnast Aly Raisman is a hot contender for an Olympic medal in the games, as is English heptathlete Jessica Ennis, according to Advertising Age.

A pleasing face
While most athletes are in prime shape, it's no secret that an attractive face can always be helpful in creating positive perceptions of a brand, even if the individual in question doesn't win his or her competition. Italian volleyball player Francesca Piccinini was recently highlighted by India Today as one of the 2012 Games' most attractive Olympians, while the Seattle Post Intelligencer featured swimmer Nathan Adrian.

Niche markets
From fencing to shooting, there are always a number of sports that appeal to more specialized audience segments. Landing a charismatic athlete in a field beyond basketball or track will often be more affordable, and if done right, can bring more attention to a product from a likely target audience.
