Spotrunner Redux - SaysMe.TV

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Another interesting article in the NY Times - (on a side note, why can’t we get the crossword for free online?) So instead of hiring a hundred creative guys armed with Apple’s and HD cameras and a green/blue screen and placing those ads online using unsold spot market Cable TV ad slots on the cheap, here comes saysme.tv that is dispensing (it seems) with the creative guys and doing the same thing.

Any Tom, Dick or Harry can make a 30 or 15 second TV spot at home, upload the creative, specify the DMA or cable TV market and saysme.tv will run the ad. Words like democracy, freedom, egalitarian and the like peppered this article. Great. Just what we want, … , grainy home footage on TV at 3:00 am.

Seriously though, the idea makes sense, as we’ve said before. The same analogy holds in the online video space, if we can figure out how to get the local guy the ability to make creative. The issue is that that the local Girl Scout troop leader probably doesn’t know the first thing about making a video. (Maybe the Girls Scouts do). It’ll be interesting to see if ad creation is as much a problem in the TV space as in on the online space.
